Record-breaking attendance at this annual event, now in its eighth year.

Cambridge Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service banner at City Hall

"I just want to say it is such an amazing sight to see so many of you out here to honor Dr. Martin Luther King today!" Cambridge Mayor E. Denise Simmons welcomed a large crown in front of City Hall on this warn - for January in Cambridge - afternoon. "This is not a day off, it's a day ON!"

After the welcoming ceremony, featuring inspirational music from new New Temple Choir of St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church, and several other dignitaries, participants dispersed to five Central Square locations to engage in variety of hands-on service activities to support Cambridge and Somerville residents:

  • Making fleece scarves and blankets for homeless children and adults
  • Creating valentines for elders and veterans.
  • Sorting food, winter clothing, books and toiletries for people in need
  • and more!

Participants brought donations of food, clothing, and books to each location.2,500 people registered in advance and included groups, families, and individuals from Cambridge and from other local towns.

The event was organized by Many Helping Hands 365, a group of Cambridge residents and volunteers coming together to help fellow residents in need.
