An Interview with Choreographer/Director Ian Berg

It was one of those nights. I didn’t want to leave the house. The snarled, rude, rush hour traffic, coupled with a lack of parking in Central Square, confirmed my mood. I was asked to film a tap dance performance at the Dance Complex, and the thought of banging metal shoes on a wood floor was not conducive to my bad mood. I was braced for agony.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

The show in question, From the Top, was performed by a local tap dance troupe called Subject:Matter. From the Top was quite literally one of the best pieces of art/dance/music that I had ever seen. It blew my mind. I am not going to try and put words to this piece, because I am still in wonderment and awe. So if you want to see for yourself, the whole performance can be viewed here:

After the fact, I interviewed Subject:Matter’s Director & Choreographer Ian Berg. He is from Chicago and came to Boston to attend the Boston Conservatory. Included in the interview are excerpts of From the Top.
