Social Media Contest Invites Users to Post Bus Pics

The photographer/winner is @AlysonFletcher on Twitter and @alysonraefletch on Instagram.

Riding the bus offers a unique transit experience: passengers can take in the sights, people and activities they come in contact with along their route. Bus riders don’t just reach a destination, they encounter unique moments of beauty throughout their journey. And now, they can share those moments with the Greater Boston community.

A social media competition called “Beauty and the Bus” asks users to capture short videos or photos of something they appreciate at a bus stop or station, a scene inside the bus, or views from the inside looking outside along the bus route. Entries can be posted on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook with the hashtag #BosBRT to be considered for a weekly prize.

Three weeks into the competition, the most recent winning photo showcases the beauty of the bus right here in Cambridge, at the Central Square MBTA station on Mass Ave.

There are four weeks left in the contest. Submissions are due by 11:59pm Wednesday of each week, with winners announced at 8 p.m. on Sundays.

BostonBRT, a research and community engagement initiative spearheaded by the Barr Foundation, launched the social media campaign to showcase the beauty there is along the existing bus routes as we work to design an improved system that includes Gold Standard Bus Rapid Transit.

Prizes will be awarded each week through May 28, with each prizewinner receiving a weekend stay at one of three Boston-based Westin Hotels and Resorts: Westin Boston Waterfront, Aloft Boston Seaport, Element Seaport Boston.  Each winner will also receive a $150 gift card to enjoy their nights out on the town. A grand prize winner will then be selected from among the eight winners through a public vote and will receive one additional night in the presidential suite at the Westin Waterfront as well as a $200 gift card. Winning photos or videos will be selected based on criteria including uniqueness, composition, creativity, and visual impact. Winners will be selected by a panel of judges influential in the city’s social media community.
